The white building on the right functioned for a while as the Laona Town Hall and as the grade school until it was replaced in 1903-04 with a new brick school building in the center of the photograph. The white building was then moved to a new location on Mill Street where it also served as a "Pest House" for lumberjacks that needed to be quarantined, as well as a lumberjack morgue.
